Taylor Fritz was torn apart on social media after something he said was interpreted the wrong way and he clarified what he meant.
The American played a really good match to take down Nick Kyrgios in straight sets and move on to round three of the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati. Speaking to reporters after the match, Fritz was asked about Novak Djokovic and his US Open participation with the American saying:
"It's at least good for every player if Novak is not in the draw."
The out-of-context comment got Fritz a lot of backlash on social media and he took to Twitter to explain it was a joke. Fritz pointed out the obvious problem of the quote being just text which makes it hard to understand in which manner something was said.
Fritz wrote:
"Nothing new just me getting ripped for making a joke about Novak being better then everyone, the issue with press transcripts is it’s just raw text and it’s not clear the manner in how things are said, what i jokingly said felt like a compliment to Novak more than anything else"
