Jannik Sinner was left visibly shaking during his win over Holger Rune on Monday in what were disturbing scenes before he pulled it back to win through 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 to reach the Quarter-Finals.
But amid multiple layers of drama including the net breaking saw Sinner also with tremors while he was taking a medical time-out. Likely a legacy of adrenaline mixed with not feeling 100%. He confirmed he had an issue pre match and didn't even warm-up to take on Rune in the end as he wasn't feeling great.
"This morning was strange. I didn't even warm up today. I knew in my mind that I would struggle. Game wise I played well, served well and hit some quality shots that gave me confidence to fight," said Sinner in his post match interview as he explained his issues.
But he also lauded the Australian Open and the doctor for their help during the medical time-out. "It helped me. It shows that this tournament has an excellent organization. They really take care of the players"
Jim Courier speculated during the match about Sinner's predicament. “You start to wonder with this, if he didn’t carry some kind of a weird bug into the match,” Courier said as per 7news. “We don’t know for sure. Pure speculation. But when they start doing those types of checks, that might be an indication that it’s not just fatigue…He is disorientated… it seems more than just the heat.”
“What is interesting is he didn’t take a shirt to go change,” the tennis great continued. "He could have bought himself two more minutes of rest time if he had changed his shirt or shoes, because you get an extra couple of minutes if you do that. So he is not thinking clearly either, because he should have done that.”
