A mere few minutes after the issues surrounding Iga Swiatek and Emma Navarro with their double bounce controversy came the same issue involving
Ben Shelton and
Lorenzo Sonego at the
Australian Open albeit with a sportsmanship ending.
Shelton took the opening set against Sonego winning it 6-4 with a decisive break of serve late in the set. In the second, players both held serve to start with. Midway through the set though came the controversy as with Shelton serving at 1-2, there was a moment of drama.
As the American scrambled to reach a drop shot, Sonego felt as if the ball had already dropped twice. He asked for a challenge and the umpire awarded the point to Sonego.
Before the umpire gave his verdict though, Shelton conceded the point no matter what it showed. On the other side, Iga Swiatek missed a blatant double bounce albeit the call was given to the World No.2 without even looking at the review so not a big chance to give the point back.
Shelton is currently two sets up on his way seemingly to the semi-finals in Melbourne as of time of writing.
