Aryna Sabalenka fell to Clara Tauson 3-6, 2-6, making an early exit from the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships. The world No. 1 wraps up her Middle East swing with disappointing results: one win and two losses, as the battle for the top ranking tightens against Iga Swiatek.
The 3-time Grand Slam champion had already struggled against Tauson in the third round of the Australian Open, but on that occasion, Sabalenka managed to assert her dominance and secure the win. This time, the Danish player got her revenge, reaching the quarter-finals of a WTA 1000 event for the first time in her career.
The first set was particularly erratic for Sabalenka, who struggled with unforced errors and had serious issues with her serve. Early on, both players were holding serve well, with Tauson appearing to be under more pressure. However, it was the Dane who struck first, breaking in the fifth game and consolidating for a 4-2 lead.
The final stretch of the set saw both players being inconsistent on serve, but Sabalenka was particularly vulnerable. By the end of the set, she had won just 47% of points on her first serve and 45% on her second.
Sabalenka started the second set well, securing an early break to get back into the match. However, she quickly lost her serve again, showing visible frustration. The world No. 1 continued to struggle, while Tauson capitalized with another break—making it five consecutive breaks—to take a commanding 4-1 lead.
There was little Sabalenka could do to turn things around, as her forehand errors mounted and she was outplayed by Tauson, whose improved level of play has been evident for some time. With her serve and backhand as key weapons, the Dane sealed the win on her second match point—once again with a break—by 6-3, 6-2. She now moves on to the quarter-finals, where she will face Czech player Linda Noskova.
