Clinical Stefanos Tsitsipas powers through Matteo Berrettini to keep Indian Wells dream alive

Stefanos Tsitsipas easily beats Matteo Berrettini and stays in the race at Indian Wells. The World No. 9 had a tough challenge against the former Wimbledon finalist, which seemed like one of the big matches of the day.

The Greek was better at the crucial moments and didn’t face much difficulty in securing a 6-3, 6-3 victory. In the Round of 16, he will face the winner between Ugo Humbert (18th) and Holger Rune (12th).

First Set

The match was expected to be decided by small details between two top-level players. However, from the start, it tilted in Tsitsipas’ favour, as he won 12 of the first 15 points, taking a break and leading 3-0. A shaky service game from Berrettini ended up costing him, as Tsitsipas didn’t give much away with his serve.

Despite Berrettini’s efforts, Tsitsipas remained more effective with his serve, winning 93% of his first-serve points and 67% with his second. For Berrettini, his biggest issue was his second serve, winning only 13% of points on it, compared to 87% on his first. Tsitsipas also capitalized on 12 unforced errors from Berrettini, who wasn’t sharp enough with his forehand this time. Tsitsipas won the first set 6-3.

Second Set

In the second set, Berrettini again showed weaknesses with his second serve, and Tsitsipas threatened with his first break chances. However, the Italian held on and was 3-2 up without any breaks. But then Tsitsipas found his best form.

The Greek continued to dominate with his serve and secured a break to take the lead for good. The pressure proved too much for Berrettini, and when he was 3-5 down, serving to stay in the match, Tsitsipas broke him without dropping a point, securing the comfortable win 6-3, 6-3.

Tsitsipas will play in the fourth round of Indian Wells for the second consecutive year, aiming to match his best result at Tennis Paradise, where he reached the quarterfinals in 2021. He will face the winner between Holger Rune (12th) and Ugo Humbert (18th).
