While Taylor Fritz and Tommy Paul continue their progression at the Australian Open, the same can't be said for a certain Frances Tiafoe who was bundled out of the tournament on Thursday morning.
Tiafoe is the highest ranked American losing out to World No.59 Fabian Maroszan 6-7(3), 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 in what is always a tough test on paper.
It also continues a poor run for him outside of his home Grand Slam. He has lost in the first week of the last seven Grand Slams outside of the United States and has not reach a fourth round in any of them at the Australian Open, Wimbledon and Roland Garros.
The only silver lining usually with that is that if he does go on a run at one of them his points defended are very minimal. But it won't be this week as he has been bundled out by the Hungarian who awaits the winner of Joao Fonseca and Lorenzo Sonego.
A match that has headed into a fifth and deciding set. Fonseca looked to be fading at one point but has roared back amid a backdrop of a heavy Brazilian contingent cheering him on. But it won't be Tiafoe in what would've been a highly lauded match, it is Marozsan.
Albeit it has not been the best week or so for Tiafoe who perhaps would've seen the signs coming. He has been struggling with the flu and was throwing up on court during his opening win of the tournament. But it is not Flu Game, it is End Game in this tournament.
Elsewhere Holger Rune is 2-1 up on Matteo Berrettini but had to take an MTO, while Tristan Schoolkate is offering a potential shock as he has taken the first set off Jannik Sinner as the World No.1 is struggling early on. But Fritz, Marcos Giron and Ben Shelton of the American contingent salvaged what Tiafoe couldn't.
Frances Tiafoe is OUT in the #AusOpen 2nd round to Fabian Marozsan, who awaits... Fonseca or Sonego next.
