Jack Sock and Sam Querrey recently discussed whether today’s generation of American tennis players is overrated. On the women’s side, the results have been more consistent, with three Americans currently in the top 5, including Grand Slam champions Coco Gauff (2023 US Open) and Madison Keys (2025 Australian Open).

Among the men, Taylor Fritz recently reached his first Grand Slam final at the 2024 US Open, where he lost to World No. 1 Jannik Sinner. On the women’s side, Jessica Pegula also fell in the final of the same tournament, losing to current No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka.

Still, American players – both men and women – continue to be regular contenders on Tour. The men have five representatives inside the top 25: Fritz (No. 4), Tommy Paul (No. 13), Ben Shelton (No. 14), Frances Tiafoe (No. 17), and Sebastian Korda (No. 25).

On the women’s side, Pegula (No. 3), Gauff (No. 4), and Keys (No. 5) are currently the closest challengers to the dominant duo of Aryna Sabalenka and Iga Swiatek, who have alternated the No. 1 spot over the past three years. Other notable American women include Emma Navarro (No. 11), Amanda Anisimova (No. 16), Danielle Collins (No. 32), and Sofia Kenin (No. 34).

“I don’t think we overestimate them,” said Jack Sock on the Nothing Major podcast. “I think our loyalty lies with fellow American players. We want to see them succeed, we know how good they are and how hard the sport is.”

“The majority of tournament winners since we’ve known tennis haven’t been Americans, but I think we know how good these guys are, and we want to see them do well and win – so we probably side with them a little more at times,” added the former World No. 8. “But no, I don’t think we’re overestimating them – we just want them to do well.”

Former World No. 11 Sam Querrey believes Americans are being rated fairly, taking into account their potential on different surfaces. “I think we properly rate them,” said Querrey. “It’s not like we expect Americans to win Roland Garros or clay court events. Nobody said that. We’re more optimistic on grass, but overall, I think we’ve rated them properly over the last 10 years.”
