Holger Rune's mother Aneke has been accused of being 'overbearing' and 'toxic' after she announced the player's split with coach Patrick Mouratoglou following his early US Open exit.
Fourth seed Rune suffered a shock defeat in the first round of the New York major against Roberto Carballes Baena. The Dane lost to the Spaniard in four sets, 3-6, 6-4, 3-6, 2-6.
Following the disappointing result, the 20-year-old's mother Aneke announced that Rune would be parting ways with well-known coach Mouratoglou.
"Holger Rune's mom announces his son's partnership with Mouratoglou now definitely over. "It just didn’t work out. Right now it is important that Holger finds the right team, that he can have for a long time. He has decided that isn’t with Patrick”, she told @jakobkloecker," tennis journalist José Morgado wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Fans take issue with Aneke making announcement

However, several tennis fans were unhappy with the split and with the fact that Rune's mother made the announcement rather than the player himself.
"WEIRD wording lady. If PM [Patrick Mouratoglou] wouldn’t have fixed his 100 wild cards he may be still battling to enter top 100. The push he got in comparison to other players was totally UNFAIR. & the whole attitude about USO [US Open], courts etc was childish. Just play-nobody is entitled continuously to all," one wrote.
"Why is his mom announcing this? Is he 11 years old? I feel for Rune. He's definitely immature in a number of ways, but it's hard for him not to be when he has an overbearing parent who seems a little toxic. He's going to have to learn to fly on his own without help from mommy," added another.
The split comes after Rune had a difficult time on the ATP North American swing, losing to Marcos Giron in the opening round of the National Bank Canadian Open before being forced to retire from his first match at the Cincinnati Open due to a back injury.
