Rick Macci, the former coach of Venus and
Serena Williams, is the latest to approach
Emma Raducanu.
The British tennis star Emma Raducanu has had a difficult journey since her fairytale victory at the 2021
US Open. The 20-year-old has struggled with injuries and a series of coaching changes over the last eighteen months, a lot of which has come under heavy media scrutiny.
Recent problems have led Raducanu to withdraw from this year's
French Open and
Wimbledon, and in a recent interview, she called the
WTA tour 'brutal.' The former British No. 1 also underwent another coaching split, separating from Sebastian Sachs last month.
Sachs was only one in a number of coaches that Raducanu has worked with since her US Open win, shortly after which she parted ways with her then-coach Andrew Richardson.
However, the veteran coach Rick Macci, known for coaching tennis superstars such as the Williams sisters and
Maria Sharapova, has revealed his interest in helping the young Brit.
Macci disclosed that he has reached out to Raducanu's agent, saying he'd like to 'get inside her head.' Whilst some have criticized Raducanu's recent lack of success on the WTA tour, Macci is confident in her ability, saying "she's a great athlete, technically sound and has a great serve', before adding "You don't go through qualifying and win the US Open. That was no fluke at all. Mentally, she's strong and a special young lady."
He is also pretty sure of his own ability to help her through this difficult period and return to her former state of success, stating that 'Nobody can help Raducanu better than me.'
Macci has a lot of experience to back up this statement. He is a seven-time USPTA national coach of the year, and has held a place in the USPTA Hall of Fame since 2017. He was even played by Jon Bernthal in the 2021 film King Richard, which tracks the rise of the Williams sisters and won an Academy Award.
