The winners of the five WTA Awards for 2024 have been confirmed with Aryna Sabalenka becoming the 23rd different woman and first Belarusian to be voted WTA Player of the Year.
The 26-year-old ended the season as World No.1 after winning four titles. This included the Australian Open and US Open as well as winning Cincinnati and Wuhan. She also snaps Iga Swiatek's two year streak winning it in the years prior. Swiatek as well as Coco Gauff, Jasmine Paolini and Zheng Qinwen were nominated.
While Emma Navarro also was voted Most Improved Player of the Year. A title that Jasmine Paolini was snubbed for despite rising up into the top three in the WTA Rankings, Navarro was perhaps best placed aside from. She started the year as World No.31 after grinding through the ITF and WTA 125 circuit last season to ascend in the first place. It was a continued rise as she won Hobart, reached six semi-finals including the US open and reached a career high of World No.8. Anna Kalinskaya, Danielle Collins, Diana Shnaider and Marta Kostyuk also featured.
Lulu Sun won Newcomer of the Year. Climbing up to World No.40 by the end of the season, she had a remarkable Wimbledon Quarter-Final run as a qualifier. She backed it up by reaching the final of Monterrey in August. From top 200 to World No.40, it has been some year for the Kiwi. She was nominated alongside Erika Andreeva, Rebecca Sramkova, Zeynep Sonmez and Sonay Kartal.
Paula Badosa also won the Comeback of the Year. She started the season ranked as low as 140th but rose up to World No.12 by the end of it. She won 21 out of her final 27 matches after Wimbledon and she reached a myriad of semi-finals and returned to some of her best. After saying earlier in the season that she required injections to continue her career, she decisively showed that there is still life in her career yet. Naomi Osaka, Karolina Muchova, Amanda Anisimova and Emma Raducanu were also nominated.,
While Jasmine Paolini did receive an award albeit this was Doubles Team of the Year with Sara Errani as they took the doubles world by storm in 2024. Gabriela Dabrowski/Erin Routliffe, Katerina Siniakova/Taylor Townsend, Lyudmyla Kichenok/Jelena Ostapenko, Hsieh Su-Wei/Elise Mertens and Anna Danilina/Irina Khromacheva were also in the running.
