Aryna Sabalenka continued winning on clay by defeating Ana Konju in R1 of Roland-Garros.
The Belarussian player had a slow start to the match but Sabalenka was able to overcome it to cruise past Ana Konjuh 6-4 6-3. Sabalenka lost her serve in the first game giving Konju the lead but slowly she would pull it back. Konjuh was hitting the ball well and Sabalenka did not adjust quickly enough. Once she did it was over for the Croatian who started making more mistakes.
Sabalenka ended the first set with a 4-0 run winning it 6-4 after being down 4-2. Konju largely depended on her serve as she did not win a single 2nd serve point in the first set. Towards the end, it faltered and Sabalenka took advantage of it.
The second set featured a lot of broken serves as neither player could withstand the aggressive attacks of the receiving player. Both Konjuh and Sabalenka are hard hitters and they attacked the serve of the serving player repeatedly. After Sbaalenka won her service game to make it 1-0 we saw five broken serves in a row.
After that exciting portion of the match, it was Sabalenka who emerged with a 4-2 lead that she extended to 5-2 with a strong service game. In the end, she closed it out with another broken serve to win the match 6-4 6-3. A great start for Sabalenka at the French Open where she hopes to win her maiden Grand Slam title.
