Prior to the power outage at the Madrid Open, Coco Gauff and Mirra Andreeva confirmed their spots in the Quarter-Finals after racing through quickly against Belinda Bencic and Yuliia Starodubtseva.
Gauff won the latest Head-to-Head clash with Belinda Bencic 6-4, 6-2 to book her place in the last eight for the first time. Aside from Miami, she has now reached the Quarter-Finals of every WTA 1000 tournament.
Minutes after Gauff won match point, the tournament plunged into chaos as it was hit by widespread power outages. The power cut also occurred as Andreeva was serving for the match but she managed to save four break points to get over the line before play was paused.
Andreeva a day before her 18th birthday raced past Yuliia Starodubtseva 6-1, 6-4. She has already won two WTA 1000 titles this year and will meet Gauff for the first time since 2023. Both of their previous matches came in major tournaments.
Andreeva lost to Gauff at the 2023 French Open 6-7(5), 6-1, 6-1 in the third round. Gauff then won again at the US Open in the same year 6-3, 6-2.
Gauff's serve was dialled in against Andreeva which proved to be the key as when it is off players like Bencic can take full advantage but when it is on, it proves to be deadly. She broke with three clean return winners in the first set for 4-2. She broke again for 3-1 in the second and Bencic was only able to win four points behind her second serve. She hit 25 winners to Bencic's 10 and won 85% of her first serve points.
While Andreeva halted the early momentum of the Ukrainian who had break points early but was chipped away at by Andreeva. She saved nine out of nine break points and in the first set, she lured her into errors before managing to halt the power cut for her win.
