Marketa Vondrousova has announced another pause in her career as she continues to struggle with injuries. The 2023 Wimbledon champion is stepping aside to focus on properly recovering from a shoulder injury that has troubled her multiple times throughout her career.
The talented Czech player withdrew at the start of the year from Adelaide and the Australian Open, making her return to the Tour in Abu Dhabi in early February after seven months away from competition. Her last match had been a first-round loss at Wimbledon to Jessica Bouzas Maneiro, despite entering the tournament as the 6th seed and defending champion.
Vondrousova finished 2023 in a strong position as world No. 7, but her 2024 season was far from successful, slipping to No. 39—an underwhelming result for a player who had won a Grand Slam just a year earlier.
After playing in Abu Dhabi, she competed at the Qatar Open (losing in the first round to Elina Svitolina) and Dubai (falling in the second round to Mirra Andreeva).
Recently, Vondrousova revealed that her shoulder injury never fully healed and that after competing in a few tournaments with poor results, she decided to take a break to focus on proper rehabilitation.
"Stepping out of the court again. I am still struggling with a shoulder injury. Although it's not easy, I now have a few months of intensive training and rehabilitation to get my arm back together. Patience and time are my priorities right now, but I believe it will all be worth it. So hopefully back on the court soon. Thank you everyone for the support."
Vondrousova does not have a set return date, though she is no stranger to long breaks. Not only did she compete sparingly in 2023, with her season effectively ending in early July, but she also underwent two wrist surgeries in 2022 following a fracture, sidelining her from April to October.
