Iga Swiatek is having a lot of trouble against Qinwen Zheng who nearly defeated her at Roland Garros and it almost happened again in San Diego but the Polish player prevailed 6-4 4-6 6-1.
Swiatek had very little time to properly rest up and recover after a long week in Ostrava as she made her way to San Diego only a day after that final. Upon arrival, she described her state as pretty fresh and admitted feeling motivated to finish off the season in a strong fashion.
It looked rather decent at times but Zheng once again put up a great fight proving herself an emerging talent that is rapidly improving. The first set was pretty close as both played well but the Polish player was a bit better on the second serve and used her chance while Zheng did not.
The second set was quite competitive as well. Swiatek had a major chance early on to break her opponent but failed to do so. Zheng had a similar chance not long after that but failed as well. At 4-4, Swiatek had a couple of break points but Zheng held on and broke her opponent to take the second set 6-4.
The final set was not the major battle we thought we were going to get but rather a landslide win by Swiatek who completely took over. Zheng was rather poor unable to hit the serve well and ultimately she could not overcome that.
