Karolina Muchova has already started the 2025 season with a dominant win over Malene Helgø at the United Cup. The Czech player helped lead Czech Republic to victory over Norway, also playing in the decisive mixed doubles alongside Tomas Machac.
At 28 years old, Muchova has proven throughout her career that she has the talent to be at the top of the WTA Tour, though injuries have limited her consistency. In her last five Grand Slam appearances, she reached two US Open semifinals and a Roland Garros final.
In 2024, Muchova was sidelined with injury until the grass swing in late June. Despite playing only a few tournaments, she finished the season with a 21-7 record, including semifinals at the US Open, a final at the Palermo Ladies Open and China Open, and a semifinal appearance at the Ningbo Open in October. This strong finish saw her end the year as World No. 22.
The Czech is making her debut at the United Cup and, for the first time in her career, is starting a season before the previous year has ended. "It's such a shame that we play after New Year's Eve," Muchova told WTA Insider. "We play in the morning. I'm like, what? Everyone says the Sydney fireworks are so good. It's a tricky one, so I'll see what I do,” she commented about spending the holidays away from home.
When asked about her goals for the new season, Muchova hopes to replicate past successes, though she’s cautious in her approach. "I think I'm too much of, like, if I say something, it may not happen," Muchova said. "So I better keep it low-key.”
“Keep healthy and consistent and work on my game. If these three things work and I gain some matches and confidence, then hand-in-hand, you can do great results,” the former World No. 8 added. “Of course, in the past I played semis and one final of a Slam, so it would be great to get back to these results. But you never know, and I'll just try to quietly work and hopefully, it can happen again."
The last part of the year was remarkable for the Czech, winning 14 of her last 17 matches. Muchova played only 8 tournaments during the season – two of which she had to retire from due to injury – and reached two finals and two semifinals. Because of this, Muchova knows that staying physically fit is key to achieving positive results once again.
"It meant a lot that I finished the season consistently," Muchova said. "It wasn’t just like a, as we call it, one scream and a silence. So I’m really happy that I could keep the level going. I was playing well. I was feeling fine. I still feel like I need to play matches and go through it to gain that tennis physique. But I'm able to do that so far now, so I’m just happy about it."
"In Beijing and Ningbo, I felt great on the court, I felt confident. I felt I was kind of getting back to my game and gaining the tennis confidence and the stroke confidence. But now is the new season, so you never know how you're going to start. But I'd be very happy to just keep on going and get back with this and then build on my game."
