Angelique Kerber and Petra Martic reached the 3rd round of the US open after convincing victories in straight sets against Friedsam and Bondarenko.
The first two matches of the day at the
US Open finished with decisive victories by
Kerber and Martic.
Angelique Kerber had a typical outing for herself where she was quite dominant at times but also shaky for quite some time. The first set was the dominant Kerber who played aggressively from the start breaking her opponent several times before closing out the set with 6-3.
The 2nd set was a bit different. She did start off well by breaking her opponent immidietly yet
Friedsam wasn't going to go down easily. She won the next game to make it 1-1. From then on we saw both players play well on their own serve but rather bad on the opponents. Neither got any break points so we ended up in the tiebreak. In it, we saw more of the same. Good while serving, terrible when not. Ultimately it was Kerber who took her chances and won it 8-6.
Petra Martic on the other hand had an easier going. She was superb from the get go breaking her opponent immdietly in the 1st game. She would go on to dominate the 1set taking a 5-1 lead. Then her level dropped off a bit making her lose two consecutive games before winning the set 6-3. The 2nd set saw much better play from Bondarenko. While she had immense issues on her own serve in the 1st set, the 2nd set was much better.
Martic could not get anything going and it wans't until the very end of the match that she saw her 1st break point in the 2nd set. Luckily for her it was also a match point which he seized to win the match 6-3 6-4.
