Martina
Navratilova criticized
Camila Giorgi's reaction during the match against Venus
Williams at the
Birmingham Classic.
18-time
Grand Slam champion Martina Navratilova commented on the match between Venus
Williams and Italian player Camila Giorgi. Williams emerged victorious with a
score of 7-6(5), 4-6, 7-6(6) in a match that lasted over three hours, securing
her first win against a top-50 opponent since 2019.
During the
match,
Venus Williams slipped while hitting a forehand shot when she was
serving at 4-3, 30-30 in the first set, causing concern among the spectators.
The American player already had a knee brace, and her injury struggles are well
known. However, Giorgi continued the point and celebrated it with a shout.
Navratilova
joined former Serena Williams coach
Rennae Stubbs in criticizing Giorgi for her
passionate celebration following the fall of the former world No. 1 player.
"Camilla
Giorgi just yelled Si when @Venuseswilliams just fell over and screamed! I mean
wtf !!! I honestly think that could be the lowest moment of her career!!!! And
you NEVER want to see this face coming at you now! Come on Vee!"
Stubbs tweeted.
"Serves
her right- Venus kicked her butt anyway!!! How disgusting from Giorgi if that
is how it happened," Navratilova wrote on Twitter.
"Oh it
did. I even had to rewind the point to make sure it was her. Was so bad!"
Stubbs responded.
"Wow!
that's worse than what Bouzkova and Sorribes did at RG. Totally
disgraceful," Navratilova added further.
