With several changes taking place on tour this season, it has been announced that the popular San Diego Open has been scrapped from the 2025 WTA calendar.
The WTA 500 event often saw the top women's players come down to the city of San Diego, California to compete for the illustrious title. However, fans will not have the pleasure of seeing their favorite stars up close and personal as the tournament has been removed from the calendar.
USTA Southern California executive Chris Boyer revealed the San Diego Open had a tough time turning a profit. Therefore, the WTA event, which is held in the final week of February before Indian Wells, will be replaced by an ATP 100 Challenger tournament.
Furthermore, Boyer would go on to state that the new ATP event would give young pros in the SoCal area an opportunity to get in some matches in close proximity and timing to the Masters 1000 event at Indian Wells.
