Tracy Austin was honoured by the WTA at a charity event attended by Hall of Famers Pam Shriver and Billie Jean King, held in Indian Wells. The recognition took place at the annual WTA reception Rosie Casals, who organised her annual Annalee Thurston Awards reception at the Palm Valley Country Club.

The award is named after a former marketing executive—who passed away in 2007—and recognises women who have elevated tennis in their specific field of work. The two-time US Open champion not only defined an era in the late '70s and early '80s but has also remained actively involved in the sport since her retirement in 1994, playing a key role as a Tennis Channel commentator.

“I thank Rosie, Billie Jean, and the rest of the Original 9 for allowing me to follow in their footsteps without having to break so many barriers,” Austin said after receiving her award. “I was part of the first generation to benefit from their actions.”

“The WTA promoters and staff like Annalee made it all possible for me. I am eternally grateful that these people stepped up to take the risk to promote what became the leading women’s sport in the world."

“I have always tried to give back to the sport, to show my gratitude. Please know that I am looking forward to years in the future enjoying every minute I spend with my tennis family—thank you from the bottom of my heart.”

The former world No. 1 was not the only honouree at the event, as Connie Spooner, a pioneer in sports health, received the Champions for Change award, which recognises individuals or organisations—whether players or contributors—who have had a transformative impact on the game.
