The record Iga Swiatek is chasing at the Qatar Open – And the three legends she could match

Iga Swiatek holds the record for the most titles at the Qatar Open and is aiming for her fourth consecutive trophy in Doha. With this achievement, she would join three WTA legends who dominated the same WTA 1000 tournament – or its former Premier Mandatory equivalent – for four straight years.
The world No. 2 has won the title in the last three editions, defeating Anett Kontaveit in 2022 (6-2, 6-0), Jessica Pegula in 2023 (6-3, 6-0), and Elena Rybakina last year (7-6, 6-2). This year, she aims to match other tennis greats and become the first player in over 25 years to claim four consecutive titles at a single WTA 1000 event.
Only three players have previously achieved a ‘poker’ of consecutive titles in this category. First was Steffi Graf, who won four straight Berlin Open titles twice: first from 1986-1989, then again from 1991-1994. She only missed out in 1990, losing the final to Monica Seles.
In the 1990s, Conchita Martínez dominated the Rome Open from 1993-1996, while Monica Seles claimed four consecutive Canadian Open titles from 1995-1998.
Swiatek is already the most successful champion in Doha Open history. However, a few players have won the tournament twice, including Maria Sharapova, Victoria Azarenka, and Petra Kvitova.
The Polish star currently holds 10 WTA 1000 titles, and at just 23 years old, she is one of the most decorated players in this category. If she wins in Doha, she will tie Lindsay Davenport for fifth place on the all-time WTA 1000 champions list, trailing only Serena Williams (23), Martina Hingis (17), Steffi Graf (15), and Sharapova (14).

- No, writer, we were not "stunned". If you knew your business you would have been aware of her statement last weekend re: her knee and retirement. The main take-away here is that Simona went out on her own terms. She surely wanted to play again after WTA & ITIA screwed her out of her final productive seasons. Personally, I believed she was going to make this announcement when I saw the President and his family in their box seats. - It sounds seriously absurd that in Davis Cup, (unlike Grand Slams such as the Aus Open), medical time outs off court with the medical staff are not allowed?? I mean, if this was an Aus Open match, and the same thing happened to Gurin then, he would have been able to go off court for official medical time out and make an informed decision whether to resume the match or retire. How come such conditions do not apply in Davis Cup?? I mean, there with Davis Cup, it is even more like a soccer match or basketball game in that teams are playing. And so as with those, it ought to be the case in tennis that if a player needs serious medical time out, then one of the other team mates ought to substitute and each team needs to have stand-ins or understudies in case substitution is needed which will be rare but as we can see here, this kind of circumstance fits. I mean, se-rious-ly, it was actually the unfairness of the silly umpire's decision that is the issue here! Further, how come it was Gurin & his team who got disqualified? If this kind of thing happens in soccer, it would be the other guy getting the yellow or red card! Because after all, it was the Belgian who's foul it was so why then penalize the opponents for something they didn't instigate? Fouls in both basketball and soccer are read as a hinderance that has been caused by the player who INITIALLY instigated the hinderance. In this case, okay, it is tennis, but while the precise rules are different to either soccer or basketball, the same type of recognition as to whoever instigates a hinderance should apply, and in this case, it was the Belgian player.Sueiyin04-02-2025
