Former world number one Simona Halep has been awarded a wildcard entry into the upcoming Transylvania Open. The WTA 250 event will be organised from February 03 to February 09 where some big-name players will participate to showcase their talent and secure the ultimate prize.
One big name that will attract a lot of attention is former world number one Halep, which received a wildcard entry into the competition. The development was confirmed by the tournament’s official account on the social media platform X — previously known as Twitter.
This will be fifth edition of the competition. In the 2024 edition, it was Czech Republic’s Karolina Pliskova who ended up lifting the title after beating Romania’s Ana Bogdan in the final in straight sets with a score of 6-4, 6-3.
The development will be a welcome one for Halep, who has been going through a rough time. The former world number one was first handed a ban after being tested positive in a doping test for the banned substance Roxadustat. She was initially banned for four years, but the decision was overturned when she appealed to the Court of Arbitration of Sport (CAS). She returned to the court in 2024. However, she did not have a successful return, as she suffered an injury and stayed out of action for most of the year.
In 2024, she played just five matches at the highest level where she lost four and managed to win just one encounter. Her only win in 2024 came against Australia’s Arina Rodionova in a WTA 125 event with a score of 6-2, 4-6, 6-4.
Halep initially received a wildcard entry for the ongoing Australian Open as well but could not participate, largely because of a fitness concern. The first Grand Slam of the year is currently going on in Melbourne, where the remaining players are giving their all to secure the ultimate prize.
