The German began her campaign with early round victories over Francesca Schiavone and Elena Vesnina. She then upset 14th seed Samantha Stosur in the third round, setting up a showdown with defending champion Serena Williams in the round of 16.
Williams was on a 34-match winning streak entering the match, and had just won the 2013 French Open. However, she was unable to overpower Lisicki, who played the match of her life to prevail in three sets. Lisicki would then defeat Kaia Kanepi and Agnieszka Radwańska to reach her maiden Grand Slam final.
However, she would lose in the final to France's Marion Bartoli in straight sets. Nonetheless, Lisicki became the first German woman to reach a Grand Slam final since Steffi Graf at the 1999 Wimbledon Championships. She was also the first German player of either gender to reach a Grand Slam singles final since Rainer Schüttler at the 2003 Australian Open.
