America’s
Sofia Kenin was involved in an interesting moment
during the ongoing Charleston Open. The WTA 500 event is moving towards the
business end where the remaining players are giving their all to secure the ultimate
prize. The one-time Grand Slam winner is keep her hopes alive of starting the
clay court season with a title as she cemented her spot in the quarterfinal of
the event after beating Australia’s Daria Kasatkina in straight sets with a
score of 6-3, 7-6.
During the second set of the contest, there was an
interesting moment when Kenin stopped and tried to challenge an electronic
call. The chair umpire had to intervene and resolve the issue. Despite the incident, Kenin will be extremely pleased with her overall performance, as this is the third event this year where she booked her place in the last eight of the competition.
Earlier, she played in the quarterfinal of the Hobart
International, where she came second-best against Australia’s Maya Joint in
straight sets with a score of 6-3, 6-1. Later, the 26-year-old also featured in the quarterfinal of the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championship, where she lost to former Wimbledon winner Elena Rybakina in straight sets with a score of 6-2, 7-6.
After that win, Kenin will face Russia’s Anna Kalinskaya in
the last-eight clash. The 26-year-old cemented her spot in the last eight of the contest after securing an upset win against the 2025 Australian Open winner, America’s Madison Keys, in straight sets with a score of 6-2, 6-4. The result is
an important one for Kalinskaya as well, as this is only the second instance
this season where the Moscow-born has managed to book her place in the quarterfinal
of a WTA event. Previously, she played in the quarterfinal of the Singapore
Ope,n where she defeated Mananchaya Sawangkaew with a score of 6-3, 4-6, 6-0.
This will be the first-ever meeting between the two players in professional
tennis.
