Marin Cilic had to go the full distance to defeat Kudla while Auger-Aliassime managed to do it in 4 in day 2 at the US Open.

A couple of interesting matches during day 2 of the US Open featured Marin Cilic and Felix Auger-Aliassime. Marin Cilic didn't have a good start to his 2020 US Open campaign as he found himself trailing during a large portion of the early stages of his match. Even so, he managed to fight back to force a tiebreak which he ultimately lost.
Kudla continued playing well in the 2nd set which gave him confidence to seize his opportunities and win the 2nd set with 6-3. That didn't wake up Cilic who continued playing rather poorly in the 3rd set. He came close to defeat when he allowed Kudla to take a 5-3 lead late in the 3rd set. It was at that time that the Croatian finally wake up and started playing better. He broke his opponent twice in the next four games to win the 3rd set 7-5.
His better play continued in the 4th set but it wasn't enough to win it quick. A 43 minute battle ensued with Cilic taking his only break point he faced during that set. Conveniently for him it was when he was leading 6-5 which meant he won the set 7-5. The fifth set was a bit easier to Cilic who won it 6-3. It was a hard fought comeback but a victory which might prove costly at the later stages of the event.
Felix Auger-Aliassime had an easier going than Cilic but his match wasn't smooth sailing either. He started the match off comfortably winning the 1st set 6-3. The 2nd set was a much closer affair which ended in a tiebreak won by Monteiro. The next set as well needed to be concluded in a tiebreak as well with Auger-Aliassime taking this one. Felix had to save a set point in the 4th set before he finished off the match in yet another tiebreak. The end result was 6-3 6-7(7) 7-6(6) 7-6(6).
