World No. 1 Jannik Sinner has not only established himself as the best tennis player in the world today but continues to rank among the greatest No. 1s in history with an incredible record over the past year, particularly in achieving deep runs in tournaments.
The Italian has become just the 4th player to reach the quarterfinals in 15 consecutive tournaments in the last 30 years. The others? None other than Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic.
The 2-time Grand Slam champion is enjoying remarkable form at the start of 2025, following a 2024 season of extraordinary consistency. Last year, Sinner achieved a staggering 73-6 record (92.4%), won eight titles, and reached at least the quarterfinals in every tournament he entered.
Three of his losses came at the hands of his great rival, Carlos Alcaraz, who defeated him in all their meetings last year: the semifinals of Indian Wells and the French Open, and the final of the China Open.
Sinner’s other defeats in 2024 include losses to Stefanos Tsitsipas in the Monte Carlo Masters semifinals, Daniil Medvedev in the Wimbledon semifinals, and Andrey Rublev in the Canadian Open quarterfinals. Additionally, the Italian withdrew before playing the Madrid Open quarterfinals, which is not counted in the official streak.
In total, Sinner has now reached at least the quarterfinals in 15 consecutive tournaments since winning his first Major title at the Australian Open 2024. The last time he fell short of the quarterfinals was at the Paris Masters 2023, where he withdrew before facing De Minaur in the Round of 16. To find a loss before the quarterfinals, we have to go back to the 2023 Shanghai Masters, where he was the 6th seed and lost in the Round of 16 to Ben Shelton (19th seed) 6-2, 3-6, 6-7.
As Sinner aims to defend his Australian Open title, he has already won 11 consecutive matches in the tournament and is set for a quarterfinal clash with local star Alex De Minaur. The Italian, the top seed, appears to have a favourable draw, as he avoids Novak Djokovic, Carlos Alcaraz, and Alexander Zverev (likely his main challengers) until a potential final.
