The 28-year-old
Diego Schwartzman will finish the season inside the top-10 for the first time in a career. The Argentine claimed no titles in 2020 but still did enough to secure his elite ten place.
Diego scored his first victory over
Rafael Nadal in Rome, dethroning the Spaniard following an impressive 6-2, 7-5 triumph in the quarter-final. Schwartzman played aggressive tennis and mixed his strokes nicely to leave Rafa behind in the opener. The Spaniard bounced back in set number two, although it wasn't enough at least for a set, losing ground in the closing stages to propel Diego through.
The Argentine was among
Roland Garros' favorites, proving that with a massive 7-6, 5-7, 6-7, 7-6, 6-2 triumph over the two-time finalist
Dominic Thiem in over five hours! Giving his 120% in the opening four sets against the better-ranked opponent, Schwartzman prevailed in the fourth set's tie break and leaving Thiem behind in the decider to advance into the first Major semi-final.
Thanks to Roger Federer's withdrawal, Diego had a chance to make the ATP Finals debut, losing all three matches but still feeling positive about his season.
"My proudest moments on the court in 2020 came in those massive wins against Rafael Nadal in Rome and Dominic Thiem at Roland Garros. They were essential for my confidence and helped me reach the top-10 for the first time. Outside the court, the more cherished moment is always the barbecue I have with my family and friends at the end of every year. I intend to remain the same person I was before; that's important for my life ethics," Diego Schwartzman said.
