Serbia’s legendary tennis star Novak Djokovic expressed his feelings after seeing former world number one Serena Williams at the Miami Open. The 43-year-old is often regarded as one of the greatest players in the history of women’s tennis in the singles category, having won as many as 23 Grand Slam titles.
Serena showed up during the round-of-16 clash of the Miami Open, where Djokovic faced Italy’s Lorenzo Musetti. The 37-year-old came out on top in straight sets with a score of 6-2, 6-2. Djokovic, while talking after the match as quoted by Daily Express, stated that it was ‘great’ to see Serena on the court. Djokovic also highlighted what Serena said about his down-the-line passing shot.
“Overall great performance,” said Djokovic. “Great to have Serena courtside obviously, Del Potro in my box and Andy as my coach, I was a bit starstruck to be honest. When I saw Serena particularly I was like ‘I’m very happy, but I’m also nervous, I’ve got to come up with my best performance’. Actually, when I had that down-the-line passing shot, I pointed to her and asked her whether it was okay. She kind of said, ‘Yeah, it was fine. “If Serena says it was fine, then it was amazing by everyone else’s standards. So yeah, great to have them.”
Djokovic came out on top in straight sets with a score of 6-2, 6-2. The Belgrade-born star, who is often regarded as the greatest player in the history of men’s tennis in the singles category in the Open Era, having won as many as 24 Grand Slam titles, will now face America’s Sebastian Korda in the quarterfinal of the competition. The 24-year-old cemented his spot in the last eight of the tournament after beating veteran French tennis star Gael Monfils with a score of 6-4, 2-6, 6-4. It will be the second meeting between the two players. In the previous meeting, Djokovic came out on top with a score of 6-7, 7-6, 6-4.
