Gael
Monfils has endorsed
Nick Kyrgios as a potential Grand Slam contender in the
future, as the 28-year-old prepares his return at the Australian Open. Kyrgios
has played only one match in the last two seasons due to wrist and knee
injuries that almost forced him into retirement.
The
Australian confirmed his comeback for the 2025 season, starting with the
Brisbane International in early January to prepare for Melbourne. Kyrgios will
enter the year's first Grand Slam as a local favourite, but his performance
level remains uncertain.
During a
fan Q&A session on social media,
Gael Monfils was asked about Kyrgios's
comeback.
"Good morning Gael, great initiative to answer questions from fans🙏. What do u think about the comeback
of Nick Kyrgios? Is it possible for him to fight for some Grand Slam? Thanks in
advance☺️," one fan wrote.
"Yeah,
100% he can win a Slam, he is so good you can’t imagine," replied the
former world No. 6.
The
38-year-old Monfils has faced Kyrgios twice, albeit years ago. Monfils won
their 2014 Davis Cup clash on clay between France and Australia. Two years
later, Kyrgios triumphed in the Tokyo Open semifinals on his way to claiming
his first ATP 500 title.
