The 2025 Australian Open is set to kick off on January 12, and fans may be treated to a dose of nostalgia if hometown heroes Thanasi Kokkinakis and Nick Kyrgios team up in the men's doubles event.
Kyrgios and Kokkinakis played doubles together at the 2022 Australian Open, and were such a huge hit with the fans that they were dubbed 'Special K's'. The duo would go on to stun the field by capturing the doubles title, their first Grand Slam title as a team and the first Major title for either player.
Although Kyrgios has been battling with injuries over the past 18 months, the Canberra native is now cleared to return to tennis. Kyrgios will be competing in the singles event in front of his home crowd at the Australian Open in Melbourne.
Speaking to the press ahead of the Ultimate Tennis Showdown in London. Kokkinakis expressed his joy at seeing Kyrgios return to competitive tennis. However, he stopped short of disclosing whether the duo would team up again in the doubles event.
"He played great in the UTS New York event (in August) and hopefully we can have him back on the tour in January,” said Kokkinakis. “Tennis has missed him and I’m sure the Aussie public would love to get behind him again. It’s tough when you have been out of the game for so long as you never know how your level is going to be when you start playing matches.
“I’m sure his level will be great because he has been ready to play for a while now. I have no doubts he will be in good form. Motivation is such a big thing in tennis and I’m sure he will be hungry to come back and play again.”
When we asked whether his Grand Slam winning doubles team with Kyrgios would be revived at the Australian Open, Kokkinakis replied: “Maybe. We are thinking about it.”
