American tennis star
Frances Tiafoe recently began working with David Witt, ex-coach of WTA icon
Venus Williams, and has shed some light on the benefits of their new partnership.
Tiafoe is currently competing at the
Atlanta Open, where he overcame stiff composition from Russian Aslan Karatsev to reach the quarterfinals. Seeded third at the event, Tiafoe played some inspired tennis to defeat Karatsev in three sets and book a final eight showdown against Yoshihito Nishioka.
Witt has a good history with American players
The Atlanta Open is Tiafoe's first tournament after agreeing to work with Witt. The former American tennis pro has coached the likes of Venus Williams and former World No.3 Jessica Pegula in the past, helping both athletes take their games to the next level. After his victory over Karatsev, Tiafoe spoke on his decision to collaborate with the American coach.
"It’s been good," said Tiafoe. "It’s been about a week and a half. He’s super chill, just like me, and he’s obviously done a great job with Venus and he did a great job Pegula. It’s good to have him on the team, we’ve been friends for a long time. I just wanted a fresh start with someone, and I thought he was the perfect guy.”
