Jack Draper secured a commanding victory over young star Joao Fonseca, winning 6-4, 6-0 to advance to the third round of Indian Wells. The British No. 1 faced a tricky draw against the Brazilian but handled the challenge with confidence, showcasing his credentials for a deep run in the tournament.
First Set
The match began with both players engaging in compelling rallies, hinting at a tightly contested battle. Draper struck first with a break following errors from Fonseca but was unable to hold serve in the next game, allowing the Brazilian to level the score.
With the set locked at 4-4, Draper capitalized on a break opportunity in the ninth game and earned the chance to serve for the set. Fonseca fought back, earning two break points in the next game, but Draper held firm under pressure to close out the set 6-4.
The world No. 14 hit three aces and won 80% of his first-serve points. While Fonseca remained competitive throughout the set, his tendency to make errors in crucial moments proved costly, with the late break ultimately tipping the balance in Draper’s favour.
Second Set
Few would have expected such a dominant second set from Draper, but the Brit delivered a flawless performance. He carried his momentum forward, quickly creating break opportunities and surging to a 2-0 lead.
At 3-0, the heat seemed to take a toll on Draper, who looked visibly fatigued and used an ice pack on his head during changeovers.
Fonseca, who stuck to his baseline game, struggled to break through Draper’s deep positioning—often two meters behind the baseline—while the Brit’s depth of shot prevented the Brazilian from dictating with his power. Fonseca managed just nine winners, a low count considering his form this season, and his 21 unforced errors proved too costly against a player of Draper’s calibre.
In the next round, Draper will face the winner of the match between Jenson Brooksby and 17th seed Félix Auger-Aliassime.
