Daniil Medvedev did his part by smashing Auger-Aliassime and levelling the score between Russia and Canada at 1-1.
He will need to step out once more onto the court in order to try and secure the 2nd point for Russia that would send them to the ATP Cup final. In the first match, Shapovalov defeated Safiullin so the doubles will decide who will take on Spain in the final. Auger-Aliassime started off well in this match hitting 3 aces in the first games.
He was not able to sustain that level however as Medvedev was able to find more and more opportunities as the match went on. The Russian eventually got the first break in the 9th game after which he held his serve to close out the set with 6-4. Auger-Aliassime was starting to make miss mistakes while Medvedev was too solid overall.
The difference in level became even more apparent in the 2nd set when Auger-Aliassime quite literally fell apart. The Canadian was all over the place not being able to keep the balls into play. Medvedev was like a wall returning every ball from every angle. He took an early 2-0 break which became a 4-0 lead and ultimately became a bagel 6-0.
A strong for Medvedev who keeps Russian hope alive. Can Safiulin and Medvedev win the doubles? Stay tuned for that.
