The 10th day of the
US Open will feature the rest of the quarter-finals with players such as Jannik Sinner, Iga Swiatek, and Jack Draper in action.
Similar to Day 9 of the US Open, all matches will be played on the biggest court of the complex, Arthur Ashe. Two of the matches will be in the day session while the other two will be in the night session. The day session begins at noon, as has been the case for the entire event, and on Day 10, it will be Karolina Muchova against Beatriz Haddad Maia.
This matchup is a clash of two players who have been making waves at the event. Muchova, in particular, has been showcasing the form that took her to the Roland Garros final last year. Let's not forget, she was a Top 5 player when she was at her peak last year. This match promises to be a display of their best tennis.
Muchova has been in top form, and it’s no surprise she’s in the quarter-finals and is the favorite in this matchup. Haddad Maia, on the other hand, has been performing well but has been overshadowed by bigger names. This match is a test of their current form and could lead to some surprising outcomes.
While Haddad Maia may be the underdog, she's not without chances if she brings her A-game. She's shown her potential in the past and has the ability to handle pressure. This match could be a showcase of her resilience and could lead to an exciting match.
The second match of Day 10 will feature Jack Draper taking on Alex de Minaur. It’s an interesting matchup on paper that has proved quite problematic for Draper in the past, but the British player is enjoying arguably his best week since turning professional. Everything has been clicking for him, from his incredible serve to his play off the ground. He hasn’t dropped a single set this week and is playing with a lot of confidence. In these conditions, his chances look promising.
De Minaur is also carrying a hip injury picked up at Wimbledon, and while it hasn’t bothered him too much in New York, it’s still a factor to consider. He’s playing super aggressive tennis, which means this match will be very exciting between two players who have been really good this year. Playing on Ashe will only add to the excitement, making it a wonderful way to continue a solid Day 10 at the US Open.
After these two matches, the night shift will begin with a proper banger. First, we’ll see Iga Swiatek taking on Jessica Pegula in a match that realistically could go either way. Pegula has been the best performing player behind Aryna Sabalenka in recent weeks and came into the event with a 9-1 record in her last 10 matches. Her only loss came against Sabalenka in the Cincinnati Open final.
Swiatek hadn’t played that well leading up to the US Open, but she’s been impressive here. With each match, the Polish player has looked better and more assured in what she’s doing. As a former champion of this event, we can never discount her chances.
Iga Swiatek v Jessica Pegula - a night shift highlight.
It’s an intriguing matchup between two players who could go all the way, so it promises to be a great match. Swiatek and Pegula have played some thrilling matches against each other in the past, and this could certainly be another epic. Not only is the semi-final at stake, but it’s also a night match on Ashe, which means the stands will be packed, and the crowd will be ready to back their compatriot.
After that, we have yet another exciting match. This could technically be considered the final in some ways because many expect the winner of this match to go all the way. It’s Jannik Sinner, the world number one and top favourite, taking on Daniil Medvedev, who has emerged as the second favourite to win the event due to his outstanding performances.
As a former champion of the event, Medvedev can’t be discounted because he’s been excellent in New York and found a great level despite a lackluster lead-up to the event. The Russian also bested Sinner in their most recent match at Wimbledon, so he will fancy his chances. He stunned Carlos Alcaraz last year when nobody saw it coming, so beating the top favourite is nothing new for him.
Medvedev has had success against Sinner in the past, although the last five matches on hard courts all went to the Italian. One of those was actually played earlier this year in Miami. Overall, it’s a fascinating matchup because whoever wins is expected to be the favourite for the rest of the event.
The quality of both players guarantees a close match with lots of great tennis, so it’s a thrilling way to finish off a packed Day 10 at Ashe. These four matches will decide the other four semi-finalists at the event, and there are some great names among them.
