Following the announcement of the US Open to hold an event without any line judges 7x Grand Slam winner Mats Wilander spoke about the topic.
Earlier the US Open announced it will not feature any line judges this year with the hawk-eye technology to be used instead in all matches. Under the system, there won't be any challenge opportunities as the system will determine which balls are out and which are in. A notable proponent of such a system has been Novak Djokovic who called for it to be installed at all events.
7x Grand Slam champion Mats Wilander has reacted to the news with concern saying:
"I think it was some kind of intrigue where the player had to choose. Okay, is this a big enough point where I need to challenge?’ I thought that was an interesting twist. It made the player think even more. Now we have no line calls. I think it just takes away some of the personality that’s on the court.”
This is not the first time Wilander has raised concern over such moves or similar initiatives. While not too harsh in his opinions Wilander has warned that such moves will make tennis seem like an esport rather than a sport. Some time ago he said:
“I think we’re making tennis esports. We’re not esports, we’re a sport where you move around and you have human contact."
What do you think ? Is this a good move for tennis in general or not. Let us know below.
