Anna Kalinskaya who is top seed at the Singapore Tennis Open is in desperate need of wins after having a topsy turvy time of it since she ascended into the top 15 after reaching the Dubai final last year. She is through the opening test though.
Kalinskaya would've seen Emma Raducanu who is the other top name this week in Singapore was defeated early morning and would've been wanting to avoid the same fate and she did defeating Caroline Dolehide 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 in just under two and a half hours.
It was a match with break points aplenty for both as Kalinskaya converted 6/18 compared to 4/9 from her opponent. In the first set she went 4-2 up but lost her serve on the verge of the set only to win it back immediately and serve it out. But not without her saving more break points in the process. This of course gave the interesting fact that Kalinskaya led but was by no means on top.
She had nine break chances alone in one game in the second as she went 4-2 up and seemed on the verge of winning the match but she was broken back and suddenly lost four games in a row as it went to a decider.
Set three was more on Kalinskaya's racquet as she surged towards the finishing line claiming it 6-2 with no break points to save at all. She now faces Simone Waltert who has just won against Ajla Tomljanovic and with Cristina Bucsa in her section instead of Raducanu, the equation could be a banana skin for her but is a lot more easier than it could've been on paper.
Ahead of having to defend a lot of points in the coming weeks, Kalinskaya could do with this run and also averting illness which has blighted her so in the last few months including at the Australian Open where she had to withdraw.
getting that first W of the season ✔️
