Elina Svitolina shared a screenshot of messages in which she asks her coach for a beer following her win in the second round of the
DC Open.
Former world No. 3 Svitolina has had a strong start at the
WTA 500 event in Washington. The Ukrainian player defeated
Victoria Azarenka in the opening round 7-6 (2), 6-4. This victory came just weeks after she beat the former world No. 1 for the first time in the fourth round of Wimbledon.
Svitolina then progressed to the second round of the Citi Open, where she faced fifth seed
Daria Kasatkina. She got through the match with ease, defeating the Russian player 6-2,6-2.
Svitolina celebrates with beer
Speaking after the match, Svitolina spoke of her joy at winning,
"I just try to fight each time I play Dasha. She's a tough opponent to face, and each time, I try to play just one extra ball over the net, to take and dictate the game. I'm really happy I won the match today," she said.
A few hours later, the 28-year-old shared a screenshot of messages with her coach Raemon Sluiter, revealing how she celebrated her victory.
In the messages sent on Whatsapp, Svitolina asks her coach,
"Can you take me one beer please?" before adding a sweet gif of the popular animated character Puss in Boots looking sad.
In the same minute, her coach replies with laughter, before saying
"How can I refuse"
Svitolina shared the funny exchange on her Instagram story with the caption
"Asking coach for a beer be like..."
A recent coaching partnership
45-year-old Sluiter is a former tennis player from the Netherlands, who reached as high as No. 46 in the ATP singles ranking back in 2003.
He has previously coached the likes of Kiki Bertens and Tallon Griekspoor, helping the former reach the French Open semi-final in 2016.
Sluiter paired up with Svitolina in March 2023 following her return from maternity leave, and she has since reached the quarter-finals of the Roland Garros and the semi-finals of Wimbledon. They will no doubt be hoping for an even more successful run in Washington.
