Persistent rain has forced the cancellation of over a quarter of the scheduled singles matches on Day One of the 2025 Australian Open and fans who did not have tickets for the showcourts either went home or tried to shelter from the rain.
As the Australian Open themselves bravely tried to stack the deck with top matches on Monday, this also has a knock on effect as many of the matches on outside courts make the schedule even bigger.
The main gift shop as per Reuters ran out of ponchos and umbrellas as fans who were more used to the hot climate of the Aussie summer were forced to shell out for wet weather clothing.
Only some matches got completed and after four hours play was basically halted. Tennis Australia said in a statement that updates were shared on the screen throughout as well as social media and the app as fans complained about not getting enough information.
But by 6pm, eight of the 32 matches had been cancelled with organisers using the cushion of an extra day which was added last year in order to get more games in.
There was a gold at the end of the rainbow of sorts though as only a few games were cancelled and the courts were dried for late play with certain games ongoing now meaning the nightmare of having to cancel a whole day of play wasn't fully realised but still not the best start.
Those matches cancelled for the day are:
Hibino-Kostyuk
Pavlyuchenkova-Yuan
Shang-Davidovich Fokina
Niemeier-Chwalinska
Zidansek-Potapova
Faria-Kotov
Nishioka-Dougaz
Dzumhur-Vukic
