Leylah Fernandez has just been one of several teenagers playing incredible tennis at the 2021 US Open which in fairness is one of the best ones we saw in recent memory. The quality of matches and the number of great matches is well above average. Against Svitolina she played another fabulous match winning in three sets.
The first set was a very encouraging one for Fernandez who entered the match with a bit of nerves. After winning some rallies and points she quickly found her rhythm with her signature lefty forehand doing proper damage. She did not serve well but it did not matter. Svitolina showed some nerves which resulted in errors and a chance for Fernandez that she took.
The 2nd set was another great one as Fernandez continued her solid play. She served better, she hit a couple of decent winners as well but it was Svitolina who controlled it. The Ukrainian player was much better early finally playing some good tennis. A couple of great winners helped her take a 3-1 lead that became 5-1 lead later. Fernandez pulled one back but the damage was done and Elina closed it out with 6-3.
The final set was a carbon copy of the set Fernandez played against Kerber. Once again it seemed like the more experienced player would have the advantage yet the teenage phenom did not let up. She truck first breaking Svitolina but the Ukrainian pulled it back immediately. Fernandez broke her once more mostly due to her lefty forehand that Svitolina was not able to solve all match long.
A bit of inexperience shoed when Fernandez served for the match as Svitolina played some incredible rallies to break the Canadian's serve. In the end, we ended up in a tiebreak where bravery paid off for Fernandez once more.
