Ons Jabeur is not happy about waiting for equal prize money at the Rome Open which will come in 2025 wondering why simply not have it this year.
Equal prize money has been a hot topic this year as many WTA players have spoken about it openly calling for things to improve. There has been widespread support for it among the tennis community but very little actually movement towards that. The Rome Open has been of the events that opted to award equal prize money in the future but it's only coming in 2025.
Last year's finalist Ons Jabeur questioned that in a talk with New York Times admitting that she doesn't understand why there is a need for waiting. Why not simply have it this year:
"I don't see why we have to wait. It's really frustrating. It's time for change. It's time for the tournament to do better."
Paula Badosa has said the same thing wondering why it's not coming sooner:
"I don't know why it's not equal right now. They don't inform us. They say this is what you get and you have to play."
The event has yet to comment on media inquiries but there is a likelihood of the event needed to prepare for such a big move because it's not a secret that generally WTA revenue for events is smaller than ATP one because the level of interest it simply not there.
