Few achievements in the world of tennis surpass the feeling of putting an end to an opponent's winning streak. Such is the case of the match between Serena Williams, the local favorite, and the Italian Roberta Vinci, in the semis of the 2015 US Open. The younger Williams had the absolute domination of the Tour and had been undefeated in New York for 26 matches.
The match, billed as one of the biggest upsets in modern tennis history, pitted a Serena at the peak of her career against Italy's Roberta Vinci, who came in as one of the players close to the top 10.
"I never imagined I could beat Serena. She is a legend and has always been my inspiration." This win not only marked a personal milestone for the European player, but also altered the course of the tournament by cutting off what would have possibly been the fourth consecutive title for the younger Williams.
Things started well for Serena, taking the set 6-2 and showing good sensations. From then on everything would be in favor of the Italian, who would end up taking the victory and advance to the final where she would face a familiar face, her compatriot Flavia Pennetta.
