World No. 25 Katie Boulter mocked "keyboard warriors" on social media following her surprise second-round exit at the 2025 Australian Open. The 28-year-old entered the tournament as the 22nd seed but was stunned by World No. 75 Veronika Kudermetova (6-7, 6-2, 2-6).
The British No. 1 came into the Australian Open in great form as one of the seeds and was heavily favoured to defeat Russia’s Kudermetova, a former top-10 player whose ranking has fallen outside the top 70 in recent seasons.
Boulter expressed her disappointment at the early exit, as she remains unable to advance beyond the second round in Melbourne. Despite her improved status on the Tour over the past 18 months, during which she claimed her first titles and climbed into the seeded ranks at majors, the Brit has yet to reach the second week of a Grand Slam.
“Obviously losing a match like that hurts, but I’m someone that’s going to keep showing up,” Boulter said after her defeat. “I’m going to have my moment, I’m sure of it.”
As often happens to higher-ranked players after losses to lower-ranked opponents, Boulter faced criticism and trolling on social media for her performance against Kudermetova. However, she responded with a humorous Instagram post, sharing a photo with the caption: “My face when keyboard warriors become experts in how to be a pro tennis player 😂😂”
Her fiancé, Alex de Minaur—who is through to the fourth round in Melbourne and will face Alex Michelsen on Monday—also joined in the fun, commenting on Boulter's post: “Hit the ball in the court…. Not that hard 😂”
Boulter’s Billie Jean King Cup teammate Jodie Burrage added her support in the comments: “Would LOVE to see them try do it 👀 you’re amazing girlie 🩵”
The Brit No. 1 now has a few weeks off before returning to action at the WTA 500 Abu Dhabi Open, a draw that already includes five top-16 players, led by Elena Rybakina and Daria Kasatkina.
