Russia’s young tennis sensation
Mirra Andreeva has lifted
the
Miami Open doubles title. The 17-year-old is already regarded as one for
the future and has produced some incredible performances in the recent past, especially in
the singles category.
However, in Miami, Andreeva put her best display forward in
the doubles category as she and her partner
Diana Shnaider defeated the pair of
Spain’s Cristina Bucsa and Japan’s Miyu Kato with a score of 6-3, 6-7, 10-2 to
lift the title. In the most crucial encounter of the competition, the winning pair had 68 percent points on first serve, considerably higher than their opponents who won just 56 percent points while serving. Overall, Andreeva and Shnaider won 78
points in the match, 11 more than the pair of Bucsa and Miyu, who managed to win
67 points.
Overall, the competition has been impressive for the winning pair. In the first round, Andreeva and her partner got the better of the pair of Robin Montgomery and McCartney Kessler with a score of 6-7, 6-4, 10-5. In the round of 16, they were too strong for the pair of China’s Yang Zhaoxuan and Xu Yifan, and they came out on top in straight sets with a score of 6-1,
6-2.
In the quarterfinals stage, they defeated the pair of Ekaterina
Alexandrova and Peyton Stearns with a score of 5-7, 6-3, 10-4. In the semifinals,
the Krasnoyarsk-born youngster and her partner Shnaider proved too hot for the pair of Jiang
Xinyu and Wu Fang-Hsien in straight sets with a score of 6-0, 7-5.
That win would give a lot of confidence to the youngster who
had a relatively disappointing outing in the singles category at the same event
where she was knocked out after losing to America’s Amanda Anisimova with a score
of 7-6, 2-6, 6-3. It was her first defeat after 13 consecutive triumphs in the singles
category.
