Naomi Osaka apologised to fans for in her opinion having to watch the worst match she has ever played as she was quickly defeated by Camila Osorio on Wednesday at Indian Wells.

Osaka was playing her first match since retiring injured from January's Australian Open as she was defeated by Osorio 6-4, 6-4 during the night. She called it the worst match she has ever played and apologised to those having to watch it.

"Worst match I've ever played in my life. Wow, I'm so sorry to everyone who watched that," she said on Threads after slumping out of the tournament at the first hurdle.

Albeit she was a bit more resolute in her assessment of her loss during her press conference. "There were certain things that felt extremely off because I could only start to practice serving after a certain amount of time.

"I think given the situation, it wasn't that terrible. It just feels like a little bump in the road."

This loss also prevented a repeat of her match with Clara Tauson which technically never was as Osaka had to retire when it looked like she was going to win her first title since her return.

Tauson instead will duel with Osorio in the second round with the Dane very much on the up since that title win.

Fans offered a differing view in saying that she should potentially drop down a level to gain some confidence back. "She should start playing challengers. Like Bencic and Svitolina after the break. She has no confidence in her tennis," one user wrote on X.

Another still believed but said she has a potential tipping point. "Wish she gets her act together at Miami and clay season. I really wanna see her back to top level again. Such good ball striker," another said.
