The grass-court season continues with the commencement of
the
Bad Homburg Open, one of the two WTA 500 tournaments taking place next
week, serving as the final stop for top stars before
Wimbledon.
The tournament has been elevated to a WTA 500 category for
the first time this year and will feature a 32-player singles draw from Sunday,
June 23 to Saturday, June 29, 2024. Notable participants include
Maria Sakkari,
Mirra Andreeva,
Paula Badosa,
Caroline Wozniacki, and
Bianca Andreescu.
Sakkari and Samsonova between the Favorites
Maria Sakkari and Ludmila Samsonova are the top favorites
for the title as the only top-15 players in the draw. Sakkari (No. 9) is
looking to gain some momentum on grass after an early exit at the Berlin Ladies
Open, where she lost to
Victoria Azarenka in the first round. The Greek star
aims to gather crucial match practice ahead of Wimbledon, where she has
historically struggled, never advancing past the third round and suffering a
first-round exit last year.
Her main rival, based on ranking, is Russia’s Ludmila
Samsonova (No. 15), who recently clinched the title at the Libema Open in
s'Hertogenbosch but then experienced a first-round loss at the Berlin Open. The
25-year-old has already won two grass-court titles.
Completing the top four seeds are
Emma Navarro (No. 17) and
Beatriz Haddad Maia (No. 18). Both players had disappointing early exits at the
Berlin Open and will be looking to gain more grass-court experience before
heading to Wimbledon. Haddad Maia will be defending her fourth-round appearance
at the All England Club.
Maria Sakkari will be the first seed at the tournament.
Badosa and Andreescu lead the Wildcard entries
The newly upgraded WTA 500 tournament has awarded some
high-profile wildcards. The recipients include Bianca Andreescu (No. 163),
Paula Badosa (No. 115), Caroline Wozniacki (No. 114), and
Tatjana Maria (No.
56).
Andreescu has maintained a high level of play since her
return to the courts, reaching the third round at the French Open and finishing
as the runner-up at the Libema Open last week, where she lost in a closely
contested three-set final to Samsonova. She aims to continue gaining experience
and climbing the rankings this week.
Badosa hopes to put injury troubles behind her after being
forced to withdraw from the doubles draw in Berlin. She will make her singles
grass-court debut of the season at Bad Homburg. Meanwhile, Wozniacki seeks to
bounce back from a disappointing first-round loss at the Birmingham Open, where
she was defeated by fifth seed
Elise Mertens. This time, she faces another
tough opponent in her debut match: seventh seed
Elina Svitolina.
