Former Brit No. 1 Anne Keothavong expressed her disappointment over Emma Raducanu’s withdrawal from the Billie Jean King Cup. The 2021 US Open champion had been officially confirmed by the LTA for this weekend’s tie, but ultimately pulled out of the competition.
Raducanu recently impressed at the Miami Open, reaching the quarterfinals of a WTA 1000 event for the first time in her career. Along the way, she claimed her first career win over a top-10 player on hard courts, upsetting 8th seed Emma Navarro.
She later defeated home favourite McCartney Kessler and Dubai Open champion Amanda Anisimova. However, her run came to an end against 4th seed Jessica Pegula, with a final score of 4-6, 7-6, 2-6.
Raducanu was expected to return to action this week in the BJK Cup, likely playing as Britain’s No. 2 singles player behind Katie Boulter. Raducanu has been a key figure for her country in recent years, and alongside Boulter, would have given Great Britain two top-level singles players.
Great Britain faces a tough week of matches against hosts Netherlands and Germany. Following the news of Raducanu’s withdrawal, team captain Anne Keothavong spoke to The Guardian about the 22-year-old’s absence: “Naturally disappointed,” Keothavong said.
“But I understand where she's coming from. She gave a lot to this team last year and was a huge part of the reason why we achieved the success that we did. I've got five players here who are highly motivated, who are excited to be here and are well prepped. I really hope Emma will be part of this again in the future.”
Keothavong also highlighted the growth of women’s tennis in the UK: “Women's tennis in Britain has come a long way,” she said. “The flip side of that provides a lot of sleepless nights and headaches for me in trying to make a decision, but you'd much rather have it that way and have a pool of players to choose from and rely on.”
